23 Oct Dr. Elena Sherwood, a local author you need to check out!
I know I have said this before, but I honestly work with the nicest people, and for that I am super grateful! Dr. Elena is a perfect example. She reached out to me months and months before our session to book herself a portrait shoot in the fall. She recently wrote and published a book called, Greatness Finds a Way, and needed some updated portraits for her branding and possibly a new book. She graciously gave myself and my stylist, Fatima, a copy of her book when she arrived to my studio for her portrait session. I thought that was very generous and just today I sat down and read the book from cover to cover. Her book brought me to tears twice and I was glued to my seat enjoying each page. Immediately after reading her book, I came to my computer to share my book review with you all. I am a big fan of supporting local businesses and the many talented entrepreneurs that our city has to offer. You don’t want to miss out on Elena’s book!
Dr. Elena Sherwood is a semi-retired therapist now turned author sharing what she has learned over the many years in working in her practice, through her various years in numerous universities, and her personal life. She is a very kind natured woman and very comfortable to be around. Also the camera loves her and her beautiful dimpled smile. I feel like her book made me learn more about her and I like her even more now (which says a lot because I was already a fan the day I met her).
Now lets chat about her amazing book! What I loved about her book is how vulnerable she was in sharing private moments of her life where she had been hurt, dealing with feelings of abandonment from moving countries with a big family, leading her to needing a therapist herself. I really liked her honesty throughout. Though the book is a short read, she uncovers her darkest moments and shares how through working with another skilled therapist, she discovered a way to make peace with her past so she could have a better fulfilling future. I found her book relatable even if I have lived a very different life. The core part of being human with real emotions bleeds through, and that is relatable to the readers. It proved to me that everyone has their setbacks, although they may be different in nature. That is it our responsibility to deal with these hard moments in our lives. Dealing with these hardships is not a straight path with an easy solution. Instead, its real and raw like the various times that Dr. Elena needed to escape her reality for a few minutes when she had been overcome with emotion. We all have been there, wanting to run from a bad moment to be left along in our room to have a good cry. I know I have. Mental health is super important for our overall health and I feel Dr. Elena really brings this fact to life. I highly recommend you purchase a copy of her book through Amazon. I’ll be sending a few copies out to my loved ones to read.
The fun thing about reading Dr. Elena’s book after our session together is I learned the deeper meaning behind her likes. For instance, I often talk about wardrobe and the clients’ likes before the session to make sure I have all my t’s crossed to make the session the best I can for the client. In conversations leading up to our shoot, I discovered her love for the colour pink and how it’s one of her branding colours. From reading her book, I discovered that this love goes all the way back to her childhood in the Philippines. It was pretty cool ah ha moment! It put a smile on my face.
I hope you enjoyed my book shout out and I hope it pushes you to action to give her book a read. I am very glad I did. It’s one of those books that I am sure I will catch myself thinking about for days to come. Also I should note that Dr. Elena offers 1-on-1 coaching and courses, if you are interested as well.
