Bad Girls Have More Fun

It’s always so much fun creating characters through photography. This is exactly what the beautiful and talented model, Katlyn, and I did back in 2019. I wanted to create a “bad girl” persona including cigarettes, jeans and tattoos. Although I used Katlyn for this shoot, in real life she is a super chill and down to earth lady who doesn’t smoke and leads an active and healthy life. My intentions with this shoot were only to create cool moody portraits and in no way do I actually endorse smoking. We didn’t light the cigarette the whole shoot because I don’t like smoke in my studio and I don’t think asking non-smokers to smoke is fair.

As you can see from above, Katlyn and I decided on a full jean look with her favourite dark jeans and an opened jean shirt. I made all the photos black and white because I felt it gave a more moody feel to the portraits. I also included one of our behind-the-scenes shots above to show you the contrast of the character we created with how bubbly Katlyn really is in real life. The only prop we used aside from the unlit cigarette was a second hand stool. You really don’t need many props to capture a moody character.

I also captured some close up portraits and really love how her tattoos look in this series.  The next time you’re planning a creative shoot, I totally suggest trying something you don’t normally do and going in a different direction.  We both had so much fun with this shoot.

It’s always a fun session when you have Katlyn in your studio.  To see more of her work, click the link below:
